Today

Today was my mom's 66th birthday. I celebrated by getting a new van. I have guilt because I feel good having this new vehicle, but I also feel sad and I don't think I should feel so happy when I miss my mom so much.

I called the car dealership at 9am and the guy said that the car would be ready by 4pm, but call at 2pm to make sure. That made for an agonizing day of waiting around. Yesterday was agonizing enough, having to sit through a whole day waiting for today. I thought I could pick up the car this morning. Nope. So I played poker, thought about my mom, had a nap, played with the kids, and finally it was 2pm. I called. It would be ready by 4 or 4:30pm. I showered, dressed, thought about my mom some more, dressed the kids. At 4:30pm we loaded the kids into the car and away we went. I signed the ownership, we waited a few minutes while they put the licence plate and hubcaps on the van, and then they said it was ready! We drove home and explored our van. No ashtray. Ha. No lighter. Ha ha. There is a lighter socket though. Two actually. One in the dash and one way in the back, behind the 3rd row of seats. We installed the kids' carseats and marvelled at how little our backs hurt afterward. After a couple adjustments for legroom on Hayden's side, we were on our way to show off the van to my dad. It was really cute because we had told him we bought a mini-van and when he saw it, he commented that it was regular size. He thought it was going to be small. hehe! After a little bit at his house, we drove to the Superstore and I bought a bouquet of cut daffodils. I tied them with a purple ribbon and I wanted to bring them to my mom's grave. I had been imagining all day what that would be like. Probably snow covered, I figured. And I was right. There was crusty snow varying from 6" to 1.5' that I walked through from the drive to her grave area. When I was pregnant with Sage, I'd walked on crusty snow in our yard and I'd severely jarred my back from doing so. So bad I'd had to go to the hospital by ambulance and I missed a lot of work. This was going through my head while I made my way over to my mom. I made sure to stomp my foot through the icy crust before putting all my weight on the leading foot. I took my time, and I didn't give up, though it crossed my mind that if I wasn't doing something so important I would've probably given up. I got to where I remembered she was buried. Alas, her marker is flat, and I couldn't find it under the deep frozen snow. I cried and told her I couldn't find her, but that I'd brought her her favourite flowers for her birthday. I made a hole and "planted" the daffodils in the snow. I told her I missed her. I cried some more. I wondered if the people in the houses nearby could hear me crying, or if they were used to sad people being next to their back yards. I made my way back to the car, the going easier because I trod where the snow lay dinted. There was no heat in the very sod though, because I guess I'm not a saint. I had Good King Wenceslas and Marlene (whose favourite christmas carol that is) in my head on the way back. I think I might ask if I could plant a shrub next to her grave, because it would sure make it a lot easier to find next year.

After that, we had dinner and did some theraputic shopping. Our rug was horribly torn and shredded so we got a new one of those, and also our duvet had a huge rip in it, so we got a new quilt.

And now some photos. (The ratty chair is something else we need to replace. We'll get to it.)

I will be taking some more photos of the van during the day tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Hayden's Pictures

And finally, Hayden had at one point during the week snapped some pictures, unbeknownst to me and Jake. Some weren't too bad! They kind of tell a story.

Hey, the camera!
I can take pictures of things. There are my legs.
There's the desk.
The desk again.
Hey there's Sage. He's interesting. Sage. You make phone calls while I take pictures.
Sage wants my camera, but I'm not going to let him have it. His toy is the PHONE.
There's the chair with a book. I sure do like taking pictures.
Uh oh I hear daddy coming. [Sage is looking in the kitchen, probably at Daddy returning from his cigarette break.]

Saturday Night

I know, I know, lots of posts, lots of pictures. If it rains it pours, Right?? Anyway here are some more pictures with the Szabbies and my dad at our house last night.

Anya doing a headstand, BJ wearing a tiara.
Carol loves to smile pretty for the camera.
I think it makes her nervous or something.
Or else she's just silly. My dad about to sip some coffee.
Anya playing with very tolerant Kitty.
My shamrock I bought for $1.99 in crowded-as-hell Food Basics yesterday.

Good Friday

A few pictures from Elizabeth and Rachael's birthday party on Good Friday.

Dhara in a darling dress (our dad bought these little green spring dresses for the twins for their birthday, and they're GORGEOUS.)

It's really hard to get 5 kids all 3 and under to look in the same direction at the same time.

Happy Easter!

Jake got creative after I went to bed last night. I fell asleep during The Ten Commandments (which is my favorite part of the Easter holiday) and I missed Moses parting the Red Sea. But that's a different story. Here's what he created. The clouds say "Happy Easter".

The kids woke up early and were amazed at the spread.

Hayden dove right in. He unwrapped little foil chocolate eggs with gusto. Sage didn't know about unwrapping and I fished as much of the foil out of his mouth as I could without getting bitten, but I may have missed a little.

Cheeks chock full of chocolate.
Little hard hat baskets, so they can wear them and be little Bob the Builders.
Note the dopey chocolate high evident in his eyes.
Very stylish, Sage.
The spread, decimated.

Even Lacey got some candy, for which she sat pretty. (The cat is eyeing Sage and his candy in the background.)
Some crafts that Jake and the boys made while I was at work on Thursday.
Hayden unwrapping Chocolate Pooh Bear.
Sage notices some chocolatey activity.
Sage wants a part of it.
Hayden plays "keep away".
Chocolate Pooh dances on the chair while Hayden sings.
Pooh ended up getting eaten by everyone a few minutes later. Even Lacey had some (which she stole). Sage's Pooh watched the whole thing from his box. His turn is soon.
Happy Easter Everyone!

Vehicle

Well, our car is on it's last tires. The transmission is struggling. The fuel consumption is out of this world. The muffler is not muffling much. The hood got jammed shut (no worries Sassy) and we can't add windshield wiper fluid or tranny fluid. The gas gauge is stuck at full, the driver's side power window motor is burnt so the window won't go down, the ceiling fabric is falling onto our heads. The tape player doesn't work, but at least Sabrina got the tape that was in there out, so we don't have knives sticking out of the dashboard, their points under the tape to lever it up so the radio would still work.

Does anyone want to buy this gem? $100 as is. LOL

So what are we doing then? I'll tell you! I applied for a car loan through a website called ineedacar.ca and they got back to me and said that as long as my credit councellor agreed that I could afford it, I would be approved. I waited a week and a half and didn't hear back, so I called them. The number was out of service. The email address of the guy I'd been in contact with was no longer good (my email returned to me as "no such address"). Well that's nice, I thought. So I applied again at Craig Terry Motors. They specialize in selling cars to people with bad or no credit. At first they said no, because I'd just applied through ineedacar.ca twice. I informed him that I'd only asked once and that they'd never gotten back and their number was now out of service. He said he'd work on it. Long story short, I finally got approved on Wednesday, had it finalized on Thursday, and I'll be driving my 2004 Pontiac Montana by Monday! My car insurance isn't even going up a whole lot. It's currently $21 a pay (I pay biweekly) and it'll be going to $33 a pay once we take the Celebrity off.

So Yay for us! New Car! Spacious Car! Young Car! A Car from this century! A Car Which Most Importantly Can Take Us To Visit Jake's Family In The Near Future! So if you see a navy blue minivan full of kids and a dog and our smiling faces headed your way, please let us in.

Later that Same Morning

Ha. He went there all by himself, and now he thinks every time he goes under the table he gets a chocolate. I explained that this was not going to be the case.

Table and picture catch up

Well, the table that my friend Lori sold me years ago, the one for which I never did end up getting the leaf, the one that had a problem keeping its southwest leg attached, has gone. It has been replaced by none other than [da! da da DAAAA!] MY FAMILY TABLE!! My dad gave it to me because he decided to buy a smaller dining set for his new decor. Yahoo!

I told Carol that our dad was giving me his table and she said "You mean The Table?" and I said "Yes. The Table." The table that my parents bought (for a small fortune) after they were first married. The table on which I've had countless birthday cakes, family dinners, special occasion dinners, fights around, loving sing-alongs, arts and crafts, homework, card games, scrabble games, and that's not all. My Family Table is now My Table. I love this table. Do you know what I love? This Table. My Table! I am so proud to have this, now MY, Table. I treasure it. I love it. I promise to keep it clean and stab-free.

Sage no longer standing at The Table after Mommy intervenes the dangerous activity.
I can remember lying on my back under the cross-bar, and reaching up with arms and legs to hang from that bar. I tried to show Hayden how much fun it was, but he didn't really get it. I even promised him chocolate and a story, but this was as close as he was going to give me... for now.
Gratuitous shots of Sage and Me

The rest of these pictures are from February. I didn't post any pictures, you may have noticed. I have some pictures of my birthday party at Marlene's house too, but I have yet to scan them (I didn't bring my camera and someone printed photos for me.)
This is Jake's Horse's Butt. He was the first one out of poker 2 sundays ago. He had 2 pairs. Someone chased a straight and got it, beating him.
It says "Sudbury's Ultimate Poker League Texas Hold'em Most Aggressive Loser Award March 2/08"
Here's a picture of when Sage bit me on the hand. Note the teeth marks.
This is before I started doing the South Beach, but I was feeling creative with asparagus because it was on sale. It was delicious. And I was proud of the presentation.

Robbie's birthday party. We showed up late and left early because Hayden was soooo sick - right after the first week of daycare.

Take care!
